About Rapides SWCD
Chartered January 1, 1980, the Rapides Soil and Water Conservation District was formed by combining the portions of Lower West Red River, Grant-Rapides, and Calcasieu Soil and Water Conservation Districts in Rapides Parish. The District, formerly Lower West Red River SWCD since May 22, 1939, was restructured so that more efficient services could be provided to land users to conserve natural resources according to individual needs and priorities.
Rapides SWCD is a unit of State Government receiving assistance from cooperating agencies to conduct a broad conservation program of technical assistance and financial support.
Objective
The primary objective of the Rapides Soil and Water Conservation District is to establish a soil and water conservation program designed to use all land within its capabilities and assist in treating this land for its protection and improvement. Goals are established and carried out in part by regular and special committees.

We strive to help the underserved in our community by educating them on how to grow and maintain home gardens to feed their families. We offer many resources on the subjects of growing, composting, when to plant, planting zones, etcetera.
The District cooperates with the U. S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to provide a “team” effort working relationship. The office operates under the guidelines of the District and NRCS in carrying out the conservation program.
